We’ve loved every minute of our journey
Over 10 Years of experience
Senior Public Health Inspector of Western Environmental Health and Food Inspection Agency took the initiative to enter Jamaica’s Food Safety industry, After over ten years of experience being a Public Health Inspector with the Ministry of Health. During this time she has witness a lack of technical and consistent support to food operators and food handlers’ that help them to develop and implement policies and procedure that will facilitate their compliance.
Some of the deficiencies identified were the: lack of frequent monitoring and food safety audits of food businesses, especially high risk businesses, inadequate training and assessment of food handlers’, lack of good working comradery between the enforcers and business operators, insufficient health information provided to operators that could facilitate a quicker compliance rate and the lack of expert advice and guidance needed to maintain food safety in their business all year round.

Taking a new approach
How many times must we fail the public before we start doing something different? According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 600 million – almost 1 in 10 people in the world – fall ill after eating contaminated food and 420 000 die every year, resulting in the loss of 33 million healthy life years. With the limited monitoring and training conducted per year by the regulatory bodies, we will never improve food safety in our country. Against that background, the only way we could combat this issue is by increasing awareness. Each individual must take food safety in their own hands. To help Jamaicans do that, we at WEHFIA have published free health information on various platforms, here are a few of them;
Ask your health inspector on YouTube, Health tips blog on Jamaica Health Tips Online, we have published two food safety books available on Amazon and provide monthly podcast.
